Our Verdict on the Revolut Business Account

Revolut Business is strongest for companies that regularly receive, hold or send foreign currency and need controlled staff cards or automated payments. It is much weaker for a sterling-only business that wants free domestic banking, cash deposits or someone to ring.

Basic costs £10 a month, Grow £35 monthly or £360 a year, Scale £125 monthly or £1,080 a year. Your deposits are protected to £120,000 only when the account sits with Revolut Bank UK Ltd, so read a statement footer before you trust the cover.

Best for
Multi-currency companies and teams needing staff cards, spend controls or API-driven payments
Poor fit for
Cash and cheque businesses, client-money firms and simple sterling-only banking, plus anyone who needs an overdraft, a business switching service or a phone line
Main cost risk
Allowance overages and paid add-ons, which can put the real monthly cost far above the plan fee

Revolut Business at a Glance

The plan fee tells only part of the story. Your normal transfer and currency volumes determine whether the allowances are enough, so the table puts each limit beside the charge that follows it.

Is Revolut Business Right for Your Company?

How your business moves money decides whether Revolut is useful or needlessly expensive. Regular currency exchange can justify the plan, while routine domestic banking may leave you paying for allowances and tools you barely use.

Revolut Business Plans Compared

Grow is the plan most growing companies land on. The jump from Basic buys substantially larger allowances as well as API access, bulk payments, advanced approvals and Business Savings.

If it were my money I would start on Basic and let the first three statements tell me whether Grow pays, rather than buying the allowance up front and hoping to grow into it. Only the differences are below.

Watch which price you are quoted. The £30 and £90 figures are monthly equivalents available when the annual fee is paid upfront. Pay month to month and Grow is £35, Scale £125.

If you are paying month to month, that gap is an eye-watering £420 a year on Scale alone.

Savings sits outside the bank

Business Savings is not held by Revolut Bank UK Ltd. Revolut says it is provided by third-party partner banks and by Revolut Ltd, and that distinction decides whether your money is protected at all. Where a partner bank holds it, eligible deposits are FSCS-protected, but against that bank’s own £120,000 limit rather than your Revolut bank account’s. If you already hold a personal account with the same bank, the two are added together.

Revolut Ltd is an e-money firm rather than a bank, so the two routes would not carry the same protection. Revolut’s help centre names both providers but does not set out which balances sit with which, and we have not found published material that resolves it. Check the position in your own Business Savings terms before treating a reserve there as protected.

What Revolut Business Really Costs

We ran Revolut’s own published fees through every plan. On currency exchange alone, Grow overtakes Basic at about £5,167 a month exchanged, not the £15,000 repeated across the web, this page included until we re-ran it.

If you exchange £6,000 a month, those two numbers point you at different plans.

If you asked me where to start, I’d pull your last three months of currency exchange off your existing statements before you look at a single plan. Pick the plan off that, not off the marketing page.

Revolut Business real-cost calculator

Put in a normal month. It prices all three plans on Revolut’s published fees and tells you which one is cheapest for that usage.

Scale£125.00£0.00£0.00£0.00£0.00£125.00

Grow is cheapest for that usage at £35.00 a month, and switching to annual billing would change your cheapest option to £30.00, a difference of £5.00 a month.

What this does not include. Guaranteed SWIFT (OUR) transfers at £20 each, correspondent-bank charges, card-acceptance fees, hardware, and anything agreed individually on Enterprise. It prices the subscription and the published per-use fees, nothing else.

The consultancy has only £5 a month in it, so if that is roughly your shape, choose on features and stop agonising over pennies.

The retailer is the one that should make you look twice. Moving up a plan halves its bill, from £202 to £104. Same business, same month, £98 saved by reading past the headline.

Look at where that £202 actually goes. The plan is £10 of it. The other £192 is £114 of currency overage, £40 of international transfers, £24 of Expenses users and £14 of local transfers. The subscription is the smallest line on the bill.

The break-even points. These are the numbers you can check yourself. Business Expert calculations from Revolut’s published fees, assuming exchange inside market hours, the 0.6% overage rate, and no transfer fees, Expenses users or savings interest.

Local transfers never justify Grow on their own. You get 90 more included transfers than Basic, worth £18 at 20p each, against £25 more on the bill. Unsurprisingly, that never comes out in your favour. Scale only overtakes Grow on transfer fees alone at roughly 550 a month.

International transfers barely do either. Monthly Grow costs £25 more and includes five £5 transfers, so at five transfers you are exactly level and neither plan pulls ahead. Annual Grow edges in front from about five. Scale overtakes Grow at roughly 24 a month.

Expenses is the line most people miss. At £8 per active person a month, five people add £40 before anyone sends a single payment. Basic becomes £50 a month, Grow £75, Scale £165.

Budget £35 for a five-person team and your first invoice lands at £75, with your cash-flow forecast wrong from month one.

So the plan fee isn’t your team-management cost. If you budgeted £35 a month for a five-person team, your first invoice arrives at £75 and your cash flow forecast is wrong from month one.

Fees Outside Your Plan

These are what you pay once an allowance runs out, and they are where your £10 plan quietly becomes a £60 one. If you are running supplier payments and payroll through the same account, you will meet most of them in a normal month.

Card acceptance is not one rate. The 0.8% + 2p quoted almost everywhere is the in-person domestic consumer rate and nothing else. Take that same payment online and you are on 1% + 20p. Budget from the headline and the gap stings quietly, every transaction, all year.

Commercial and international cards cost roughly three times the headline. If most of your takings come from other businesses, model those higher rates rather than budgeting from the 0.8% figure. That is the number your statement will show you, not the one on the poster.

Eligibility and Application

Revolut Business accepts private limited companies, public limited companies, LLPs, limited partnerships and partnerships. Your company has to be fully incorporated and active before you apply.

Sole traders: Revolut’s own sources disagree

Revolut’s current UK eligibility information is inconsistent. Its Help Centre lists sole traders as unsupported, while its Revolut Bank UK Business Terms, effective 28 April 2026, include “new sole traders”. We have not found a definitive answer in Revolut’s current published material on which rule applies to new applications, and we will not call it either way until they do. Until Revolut aligns those sources, we cannot treat sole traders as clearly eligible.

We read both directly on 24 July 2026. Neither is dated in a way that lets it override the other.

What you need to apply. Photo identification, a selfie and proof of address for each owner or controller, plus your registration number and ultimate beneficial owner details. Revolut also asks what the business actually does, and checks it against its restricted list.

Have the registration number and beneficial owner details to hand before you start, because the application asks for them mid-flow.

How long it takes. Budget for days, not minutes. Revolut says it aims to review an application within 24 hours of submission, and that the estimate varies with complexity.

Verification can stretch it well beyond that, so do not close your old account until the new one is open.

Client money is prohibited

Revolut Business cannot be used as a client account. Revolut says you may not hold, exchange, transfer or manage money that still belongs to a customer, and the restriction applies to every business type without exception. Only money the business has already earned may be deposited. Solicitors, letting agents, payment intermediaries and some agencies should settle this before applying, not after.

Some sectors are refused outright rather than merely scrutinised, and this is the list I would check before you fill in a single field. The most material ones:

  • Weapons, defence and armaments
  • Adult content and services
  • Auctions and fine art dealing
  • Gambling and quasi-cash
  • Cannabinoids and controlled chemicals
  • Unregulated or high-risk financial services, and parts of the crypto sector
  • Charities, trusts, private foundations and some public bodies

If you’re anywhere near those categories, read Revolut’s unsupported industries page before you apply. Finding out after you have moved your banking across is an expensive way to learn it.

Is Revolut Business FSCS-Protected?

Your eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 when the Business account is held with Revolut Bank UK Ltd. If yours sits with Revolut Ltd, it is an e-money account, and e-money is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected.

That is a materially weaker position if the firm fails, and it is not a distinction you want to discover afterwards.

So the cover follows the entity, never the date you opened the account. Check the footer of a Business statement to see which one holds yours.

This is worth ten minutes of your time before quarter-end. If you’re holding a VAT payment or a payroll float in there, you want to know which entity is standing behind it before you need the answer.

Two steps settle it for your own account. Do both, in this order:

  1. Open or download a Business account statement and read the footer. It names the entity your account is registered with. This is the one that settles it.
  2. In Account details, look at “Bank and address details”.

You can see two different things in two places. Revolut says payment details may still be associated with Revolut Ltd after the account itself has moved, so it points you to the statement footer as the check that identifies your account entity.

Revolut says the phased rollout that began in early 2026 is now complete, and that accounts opened with Revolut Ltd during it move to the bank automatically, with notice beforehand.

Not every business qualifies. If you are a financial firm, check this before anything else. These categories are excluded from FSCS deposit protection altogether:

  • Credit institutions and other financial institutions
  • Investment firms
  • Insurance and reinsurance undertakings
  • Collective investment undertakings and pension funds
  • Public authorities

If your business is one of those, the £120,000 simply does not apply to you.

If you run a limited company or an LLP, your cover is separate from your own money, because the company is a separate legal entity.

A sole trader gets no such separation. Your business and personal balances at the same firm are added together inside one £120,000 limit, which catches people out more often than it should.

Confirm the position for your own account through Revolut’s entity checker, its note on accounts opened during the rollout, and the FSCS.

Cards, Team Controls and Expenses

The plan fee is not the whole team cost, because the Expenses app is charged per person on top of it. Basic does get you cards, controls and team access. What it does not get you is custom approvals and permissions.

A person counts as active from the moment they submit their first expense. Someone who has left may stay chargeable until you remove their Expenses access, so your month-end bill can still carry a name that left in the spring.

Where it earns its money is the month-end close. Someone fills the van, photographs the receipt in the app, and it attaches to the transaction before your bookkeeper next opens Xero.

International Payments and FX

Currency is what you are buying here. You hold 25+ currencies in separate sub-accounts, and money arriving in dollars or euros stays in that currency instead of being converted the day it lands.

For a studio invoicing a US client, that is the whole point: you choose when to exchange rather than taking whatever rate applied on payment day.

What an exchange costs comes down to three cases:

  • Inside your monthly allowance: the interbank rate, no markup.
  • Above the allowance: 0.6%.
  • Outside standard market hours: 1% on top, on every plan. This rate is published, not hidden.

Run the supplier payments on a Saturday and the 1% out-of-hours charge lands on top of the exchange, whatever the rate is doing. Bide your time until market hours resume and it disappears.

On £20,000 exchanged that is £200 for the sake of waiting until Monday, which is the cheapest saving anywhere on this page.

International transfers beyond your allowance cost £5. A Guaranteed SWIFT (OUR) transfer costs £20 on top, and correspondent banks in the chain can deduct charges that Revolut does not control.

There is no universal crossover against Wise. It moves with the currency route, the amount, the number of transfers, the quote on the day and whether you pay Revolut monthly or annually. Anyone publishing a single threshold, this page included until now, is guessing.

The calculator above prices the Revolut side from your own usage. If you are choosing between providers, our Wise versus Revolut comparison explains why the better fit changes with the route and the way you use the account.

Cash, Cheques, Direct Debits, Credit and Switching

For some businesses a single line in this table ends the decision, which is why we have put it here rather than buried it in the FAQs.

What Revolut Business does not do
LimitationWhat it means for you
No cash depositsThere is no branch or Post Office route on any plan. A business taking cash needs a different primary account
No cheque depositsRevolut’s own suggestion is to ask the payer to send a bank transfer instead
No overdraft or creditNo overdraft, no business credit card, no credit facility. A bad month has to be funded from your own balance
Outbound Direct DebitsSupported in sterling and euros only, and not with merchants outside the UK and Europe
Inbound Direct DebitsNot supported. If you collect from customers by Direct Debit, you need a separate provider
Existing Direct DebitsCannot be moved across automatically. Every mandate has to be set up again by hand
No business switching serviceRevolut is on the Current Account Switch Service for personal accounts only, so nobody moves your payments and mandates for you
No client accountsThe account cannot hold money that still belongs to a customer
Sources: Revolut Business help centre and the Current Account Switch Service participant list, both checked 24 July 2026.

The switching gap is the one people underestimate. Moving a personal account is a seven-day automated job that somebody else does for you. Moving your business account here means rebuilding every mandate and telling every payer yourself, and nobody is coming to help.

Customer Support and Account Restrictions

Support is in-app chat, advertised as 24/7 in English, with no general phone line and no branches. Complaints go through Revolut first, and whether you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service depends on the size and type of your business.

Sadly, that model is fastest for a question and slowest for a crisis. When an automated check restricts your account, chat is the only door you have, and it is the same door everyone else is queuing at.

On ratings, be careful what you are reading. Revolut’s Trustpilot profile covers all of Revolut and is dominated by personal app customers. It is not a Revolut Business score, and we do not use it as one or feed it into any rating on this page.

The business-specific ratings are the relevant evidence here, rather than a brand-wide score dominated by personal customers. We checked each source directly on 24 July 2026.

Trustpilot (Revolut brand-wide, NOT the business account)4.7 out of 5Brand-wide context only
Sources, all read directly on 24 July 2026: Apple App Store, Google Play, Smart Money People. The App Store figure comes from Apple’s own store feed, which gives 4.90747 from 58,212 UK ratings on version 6.1; the store page rounds it. Google Play shows 45.2K on its badge while the histogram below sums to about 44,400, because Google filters the two differently.

We also read 100 Revolut Business reviews on Smart Money People, dated 15 April to 12 July 2026, and coded what they actually talk about. The split was 92 five-star, 5 four-star and 3 one-star.

Treat that sample with care, because we do. 85 of the 100 land inside a nine-day window in April, which is the shape of a review-solicitation campaign rather than a steady stream of opinion. Four of them describe personal rather than business use.

We coded each one by theme and then checked the coding by hand. App usability came up 36 times, support 26, onboarding 20, currency and multi-currency 10, cards 5 and expenses 5. Account restrictions came up 3 times, and only 2 of those survived our hand-check as genuine restriction complaints.

All three one-star reviews criticised how support handled the problem rather than the product itself. That is the pattern worth knowing about:

  • Sudden account restrictions triggered by automated checks
  • The wait to get a restriction lifted, with chat as the only route
  • No general phone line when a payment is time-critical

Two genuine restriction complaints in 100 reviews is not a failure rate, and we are not presenting it as one. What the sample shows is that support handling, not the product, is the sore point when something goes wrong.

The practical read. If even a temporary account restriction could stop payroll or another deadline-critical payment, I would keep a second account open alongside it, and treat that as part of the cost of running this one.

It is a sensible safety net for any account that can lock on an automated check, not a criticism unique to Revolut.

Work out which payments in your month cannot slip. If that list isn’t empty, I’d treat a second account as part of the cost of running this one, not as belt and braces.

FAQs

  • Is Revolut Business FSCS-protected?

Eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000, but only when the account is held with Revolut Bank UK Ltd (FRN 981170). An account held with Revolut Ltd is an e-money account, where funds are safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected. The cover follows the entity, not the date you opened the account, so check the footer of a Business statement to see which one holds yours. Credit institutions, financial institutions, investment firms, insurers, funds and public authorities are excluded from deposit protection altogether. Checked 24 July 2026.

  • Can a sole trader open a Revolut Business account?

We cannot give you a straight answer, because Revolut’s own sources disagree. Its Help Centre lists “Freelancer or soletrader” among unsupported business types, while its Revolut Bank UK Business Terms, effective 28 April 2026, list “new sole traders” among those who can open a Business Account. We read both directly on 24 July 2026. The Business Terms carry an effective date, but the Help Centre page shows no clear publication or revision date, so the dates do not resolve the contradiction, and we have not found a definitive answer in Revolut’s current published material. Check the eligibility shown to you during sign-up rather than relying on either page.

  • What does Revolut Business actually cost once allowances run out?

Local transfers cost 20p each beyond your allowance and international transfers £5, with Guaranteed SWIFT (OUR) transfers £20 on top. Currency above the monthly allowance costs 0.6%, and anything exchanged outside market hours costs 1% more. Cash withdrawals cost 2% from the first one. The Expenses app adds £8 per active person a month and Payroll £3. Use the calculator on this page to price your own usage: for a five-person team the add-ons alone can exceed the plan fee.

  • Does Revolut Business accept cash or cheques?

Neither, on any plan. There is no branch or Post Office deposit route, and Revolut’s own suggestion for a cheque is to ask the payer to send a bank transfer instead. If your business handles physical cash, in hospitality, retail or market trading, you need a different primary account. Starling, Tide and the high-street banks all offer cash deposit options.

  • Can I switch my business account to Revolut automatically?

No. Revolut appears on the Current Account Switch Service for personal accounts only, with no business listing, so nothing moves across automatically. You have to recreate every Direct Debit by hand and tell every payer your new details yourself. Outbound Direct Debits work in sterling and euros once set up; inbound Direct Debits are not supported at all, so if you collect from customers that way you will need a separate provider. Checked 24 July 2026.

  • Does Revolut Business offer invoicing?

Yes, on every plan including Basic. You can create invoices, schedule recurring ones, add VAT details and send automatic payment reminders. Invoices are payable by bank transfer with no extra setup. To accept card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Revolut Pay on an invoice you must first activate a separate Merchant account, which is its own sign-up and its own approval, priced from 0.8% + £0.02 in person and 1% + £0.20 online.

How We Reviewed Revolut Business

What we did. We hold a Revolut Business account and have run multi-currency transfers and card payments through it. For this update we rebuilt the page against Revolut’s contractual fee schedule rather than its marketing pages, because the two disagree in places that cost money.

What we did not test. We have not tested Payroll, the Business API, or a merchant acceptance account, and we have not run a sole-trader application to settle the eligibility conflict. Where we have not tested something, we have not implied that we have.

Source hierarchy. Contractual fee terms first, then the plan comparison, then the help centre, then regulatory sources. We trawled all of them by hand on 24 July 2026.

We checked Revolut’s current Help Centre, contractual fee schedule, plan comparison and Business Terms directly, opening the Business Terms PDF itself rather than trusting anyone’s summary of it.

Where the contractual schedule and the marketing table conflict, the contractual figure governs and we say so. Revolut’s cash withdrawal caps are one such case.

Customer evidence. We used business-specific sources only: the Revolut Business app listings, then Smart Money People’s business-account listing, then our own coded sample. We do not use Revolut’s brand-wide Trustpilot profile as a business-account score.

The sample is 100 reviews dated 15 April to 12 July 2026, coded by theme and hand-checked. We report its skew rather than hiding it: 85 of the 100 sit in a nine-day April window.

What changed on 24 July 2026. We made nine corrections, most of which make the page cheaper to act on. Cash withdrawals are 2% from the first one, not free to a daily limit. Business API access is Grow and above, not Scale only.

We replaced our claim that the out-of-hours rate was undisclosed: it is a published 1%. We rebuilt the card and expense rows too, because Basic does get team cards, and the Expenses app is charged per person on every plan.

We split card acceptance by channel and card type, replacing a blanket 0.8% + 2p. We dropped the £15,000 plan and Wise crossover claims entirely, and put reproducible break-even calculations and the calculator above in their place.

We also removed an unsupported one-to-two-day account opening claim, and reopened sole-trader eligibility as an unresolved conflict between two of Revolut’s own live sources.

Cite this review. Business Expert, “Revolut Business Account Review”, product data checked 24 July 2026. Method: Revolut’s current pricing, contractual fee terms and UK account terms, combined with our own account and business-specific customer evidence.

Update cadence. We re-verify this page at least quarterly, and whenever Revolut changes pricing, eligibility, regulatory status or protection. Next scheduled review: October 2026. Some links on this page are affiliate links, see our editorial policy.
