Shopify POS vs Clover at a Glance

Where you sell decides this. If you sell online as well as in person, Shopify POS puts your counter on the same system as your website, so one stock list and one dashboard cover both.

If nearly everything you take is in person, Clover offers terminals designed for a busy counter or a restaurant floor. What you give up for them is an 18-month minimum period and card rates you only see once you ask for a quote.

Cost is the other difference, and it starts with how much you can price before you sign. Shopify publishes its fees: monthly plans from £25, in-person rates of 1.7% + 0p on Basic or 1.5% + 0p on Advanced via Shopify Payments. Clover publishes its device and service plan charges but quotes card transaction rates business by business, so the biggest cost is the one you cannot see up front.

Which Is Better for Small UK Businesses?

If your shop has a website, Shopify POS is almost certainly the answer. Your online stock, in-store sales and card payouts run through one dashboard, and of the two providers we compared it is the only one that also runs the online shop itself, so there is no second system to pay for or reconcile.

A Bristol independent bookshop selling via its Shopify store and a counter reader saves the cost of reconciling two systems. The Basic plan at £25/month covers both channels; you buy the card reader outright and pay 1.7% + 0p on every in-person transaction.

Clover is built for the opposite case: a busy hospitality venue where kitchen screens, table management and staff scheduling matter more than a web checkout. A Manchester pub with 200 covers could run a Clover Flex for ordering at the table and a Clover Station Duo at the bar, both on the same system.

If you sell only in person and have no website, a negotiated Clover rate may undercut Shopify’s 1.7% (Basic) or 1.6% (Grow) once your card volume is high enough. To get that saving, you accept a rate you will not know until Clover quotes it, and an 18-month minimum period.

Shopify POS vs Clover Fees and Charges

Card Transaction Fees

Shopify Payments UK in-person rates are 1.7% + 0p on Basic (£25/month), 1.6% + 0p on Grow (£65/month), and 1.5% + 0p on Advanced (£344/month). All major card readers are covered. Source: shopify.com, verified 5 October 2026.

If you route payments through a third-party processor instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra 0.6% on Advanced up to 2% on Basic. That fee sits on top of whatever your processor charges, so the cheaper processor you moved to has to beat Shopify Payments by more than the extra fee before you come out ahead.

Clover does not publish its transaction rates. Clover UK promises “pricing tailored to your business requirements” rather than a rate card, so your rate exists only in the written quote Clover gives you.

Monthly, Setup and Contract Costs

Shopify POS Lite is included with every Shopify plan. POS Pro, which unlocks staff permissions, advanced inventory, and in-store analytics, costs £69/month per location. Hardware is sold outright with no minimum contract.

Clover charges its devices by the month: £15 + VAT for the Flex Pocket or Flex, £20 + VAT for the Mini and £30 + VAT for the Station Duo. Service plans run from the free Payments Plan through Essentials at £6.99 and Register at £39.95 to Table Service at £59.95 a month for the first device; Clover’s pricing page does not say whether plan prices include VAT. Source: uk.clover.com, verified 12 October 2026.

Other Fees to Watch

Shopify has no setup fee and no contract. Chargebacks carry a £10 fee per disputed transaction, refunded if you win. FX conversion fees apply if you sell in non-GBP currencies via Shopify Payments.

Clover contract exits can be expensive. Its UK agreement has an 18-month minimum period, and leaving inside it means paying the monthly Clover service fees left to run until the 18 months are up.

Fee Verdict: Who Costs Less

For a smaller retailer, Shopify at 1.7% + 0p (Basic) or 1.6% + 0p (Grow) with no contract is the cost you can price before you sign. At high volumes a negotiated Clover rate could save money on processing, but with no published Clover rate we cannot name the volume where that starts.

That saving is only a possibility while Clover keeps its rate card private. Our advice before signing any Clover contract is to get the card rate in writing and work out what leaving early would cost, because those two figures decide whether Clover beats Shopify for you, and the published device charges tell you neither.

Shopify POS vs Clover Payment Methods and Checkout

Cards, Wallets and Alternative Payment Methods

Shopify Payments handles Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shop Pay. In-person, card readers accept contactless, chip and PIN, and mag-stripe. Online, Shopify supports PayPal and Klarna as separate integrations.

Clover accepts Visa, Mastercard, Amex, contactless, and chip and PIN in-person. The Clover App Market includes integrations for gift cards and loyalty programmes. For web sales Clover offers ready-made payment pages and an API, but no full online store.

Checkout Experience

Shopify POS runs on an iOS or Android app on tablets and iPhones, so new staff are working on a kind of device they already know rather than a terminal they have to learn from scratch. Your Shopify admin shows online orders alongside in-person sales in the same view.

Clover’s POS software is written for its own hardware and goes further into running a venue: sending orders to a kitchen display, managing covers and taking orders at the table on a Clover Flex. There is more for staff to learn than on Shopify’s tablet app, but for a restaurant that depth is the reason to choose it.

Methods Verdict

If you take orders on a website as well as at the counter, Shopify is the better choice here: Shopify Payments takes both, so there is no second payment provider to sign up with or reconcile.

For taking payment at the table, Clover is ahead: billing at the table, splitting bills, handling tips and sending orders to the kitchen are all part of its system. If your venue depends on those, Shopify POS falls short, and we found no Shopify POS equivalent to Clover’s kitchen display and table management in either provider’s published features.

Shopify POS vs Clover Hardware, POS and In-Person

Card Readers and Terminals

Shopify’s UK card hardware comes down to the WisePad 3 reader, which takes contactless and chip and connects via Bluetooth, and Shopify’s own POS Terminal. The Tap & Chip reader is sold for the US only. Whichever you buy, you own it outright. Shopify’s UK hardware store did not show sterling prices when we checked on 6 October 2026, so we do not quote them here.

Clover’s hardware is proprietary. The Clover Flex is a handheld terminal with a built-in printer and barcode scanner. The Clover Mini is a compact countertop terminal. The Clover Station Duo suits high-volume counter service with a customer-facing display.

Clover UK lists each device at a monthly charge rather than a purchase price: £15 + VAT for the Flex Pocket or Flex, £20 + VAT for the Mini and £30 + VAT for the Station Duo.

POS Software and Hardware Add-ons

Shopify POS Lite covers basic sales, product management, and inventory synced to your online store. POS Pro (£69/month per location) adds staff roles, in-store analytics, and smart inventory suggestions. The Shopify App Store extends this with loyalty, barcode scanning, and accounting integrations.

Clover says it connects to 150+ apps and integrations, weighted towards running the premises: kitchen display systems, employee shift scheduling, table management, loyalty programmes, and tip management. We rate it the deeper of the two for hospitality, because in a restaurant the till has to run the kitchen and the rota as well as take the payment.

In-Person Verdict

For a restaurant, cafe or bar, Clover is the better system. Its terminals are designed for the counter and the table, and its software reaches into kitchen routing and table management. If most of your takings come across a counter or at the table, Shopify POS gives you much less help running the service itself.

For a shop that also sells online, Shopify POS is the better system. One stock list shared by the website and the counter, rather than two systems you have to keep in step, is worth more than any till feature Clover adds.

Shopify POS vs Clover Online Payments and Integrations

Shopify’s online checkout is its core product. Your online store, checkout page, and payment gateway are native to the platform. Payment Links let you send a purchase URL by email or SMS without a full storefront.

Clover UK offers ready-made online payment pages and an API, so it can take web payments. It has no full online store of its own, so Shopify goes much deeper on selling online.

Platform Integrations

Shopify integrates natively with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and most major accounting platforms via the App Store. Google Shopping, Meta, and TikTok integrations are built in. Email marketing, loyalty, and reviews tools install without custom code.

Clover integrates with its App Market for physical operations. Accounting exports are possible but the integration depth for web commerce, social selling, and digital marketing tools is much thinner than Shopify’s.

Online Verdict

Online, Shopify is the clear choice. If any part of your revenue comes from a website, Shopify POS is the only option of the two that gives you a full online store as well as payments.

For a business that also sells online, we cannot make the case for Clover. Its payment pages take web payments, but without a full online store you would need a separate storefront and a second system to manage.

Shopify POS vs Clover Payouts, Contracts and Risk

Settlement Speed and Payout Schedule

Shopify Payments settles to your UK bank account in 3 business days. Payout timing is visible in your Shopify admin. Source: Shopify Help Center payout timing page, verified 5 October 2026.

Clover UK’s own pages disagree on payout speed. Its sales page advertises next-business-day settlement as standard, while its help-centre FAQ says funds typically arrive three to five working days after the transaction, or the next working day if you qualify for faster funding.

Contract Length and Exit Terms

Shopify has no minimum contract. You pay monthly and can cancel at any time with no early-termination fee. Hardware you have purchased is yours to keep.

Clover’s UK agreement has an 18-month minimum period. You can give one month’s written notice at any time, but leaving inside the minimum period means paying the monthly Clover service fees left to run.

Clover’s own terms give the example: leave after 12 months and you pay six months of service fees. Because that cost is written into the agreement, you can work it out from your service plan before you sign, which is more than you can do for the card rate until Clover quotes it.

Reserves, Holds and Account Stability

Shopify Payments is underwritten by Stripe. Account holds and fund freezes are a known risk with Stripe-underwritten accounts, particularly for businesses in flagged categories or with high refund rates. Our advice, with either provider, is to keep a second way of taking cards ready before a hold ever happens, so a frozen payout does not stop you trading.

Clover processes UK card payments through First Data Europe Limited, part of Fiserv and authorised by the FCA (register number 582703). Its merchant conditions let it withhold payouts it suspects are fraudulent and change how it settles your account if it sees a chargeback risk, so the same backup-account advice applies.

Shopify POS vs Clover Customer Reviews and Reputation

Trustpilot and Independent Review Themes

Clover UK holds a 4.5/5 Trustpilot score across 2,724 reviews (October 2026). Merchants praise helpful, responsive customer service. Negative reviews flag contract terms and cancellation fees. Source: uk.trustpilot.com/review/uk.clover.com.

Reviews of Shopify POS are hard to separate from reviews of Shopify as a whole. The complaint that recurs in the reviews we read is paying £69/month for POS Pro just to access staff roles and basic inventory features. On a tight budget, that add-on changes the sums for the whole platform.

Support Channels and Response Times

Shopify offers 24/7 live chat and email support. Phone support is available on higher plans. The help documentation is extensive and covers POS-specific queries in detail.

Clover UK includes 7-day phone support, and gives each merchant a dedicated Concierge for account administration, statement queries and day-to-day account support.

Reputation Verdict

Clover’s 4.5/5 across 2,724 Trustpilot reviews is a good score, and what complaint there is keeps coming back to the agreement rather than the product: the hardware and software are well regarded, while the exit-fee comments run through the reviews consistently enough to plan around. We read them as a warning about the contract, and they match what Clover’s own terms say about leaving inside the minimum period.

Shopify’s reputation among retailers is good, with one recurring complaint: features that feel like they should be included cost £69/month extra. If that is your only gripe with a platform, you are in reasonable shape.

Shopify POS vs Clover for International Payments

Shopify Payments supports selling in multiple currencies. International customers see prices in their local currency; Shopify converts at its published exchange rate and settles in GBP. The FX charge is applied at conversion and is not separately disclosed per transaction.

Clover handles GBP in-person transactions through First Data Europe, part of Fiserv. Clover UK says its online payments accept a range of major trading currencies.

If you sell to EU customers online, or you want a tourist to tap their card and have it settle at a known rate, Shopify Payments handles that natively inside a full online store. Clover’s online payment pages take other currencies too, but with no online store of its own you would be building the shop somewhere else.

Downsides of Shopify POS and Clover

Downsides of Shopify POS

POS Pro is an expensive add-on for features most shops would expect as standard. Staff roles, exchange processing, and advanced inventory all require the £69/month per-location upgrade, and a retailer with more than one shop pays it again for every site.

Shopify Payments is the only way to use the standard in-person rate. If you use a third-party processor, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee (0.6% on Advanced up to 2% on Basic), which erodes any benefit from a specialist processor.

Shopify POS depends on internet connectivity. The offline mode is limited to accepting payments locally, and full syncing requires a live connection. For a market trader or an event seller working on a weak signal, it means you can take the payment but your stock and records will not catch up until the connection does.

Downsides of Clover

Contract lock-in is the primary risk. The UK agreement has an 18-month minimum period, and leaving early means paying the remaining monthly service fees. If your business changes or pivots online, exiting a Clover contract can be costly.

Clover’s pricing is hard to compare by design. Without a published rate card, you cannot weigh your Clover deal against another provider until you have been through a full sales process, which leaves Clover holding the numbers while you negotiate.

Clover has online payment pages and an API but no full online store. If you add e-commerce later, you need a separate storefront and a second system you did not plan for at sign-up.

Alternatives to Shopify POS and Clover

SumUp Solo Lite is the simplest no-contract card acceptance: £25 for the reader, 1.69% per transaction, no monthly fee. If you are a sole trader or market seller who wants to take cards in person without signing up to a platform, we rate it the easiest of the three alternatives to start with.

Square POS sells its card reader from £19 + VAT, has more developed till software than SumUp, and charges a flat 1.75% in person with no monthly fee on the basic plan. For a small retailer who wants proper till features without committing to Shopify’s whole platform, Square is the closest alternative.

Visit Square →

Tide Card Reader charges 0.69% + 3p on UK consumer debit cards on its Sell In-Person Premium plan (£19.99 + VAT a month), the lowest published in-person rate of the three alternatives here. It pays off if your business already banks with Tide and takes enough card payments for the lower rate to cover the monthly fee; below that point, SumUp’s 1.69% with no monthly fee comes out cheaper.

Final Verdict: Shopify POS or Clover?

Choose Shopify POS if your business sells online and in-person. The unified inventory, one-platform checkout, and transparent monthly pricing make it the default answer for UK retail businesses that run any kind of web presence.

Choose Clover if you run a hospitality venue, quick-service restaurant, or high-volume counter operation where kitchen display, tableside ordering, and employee management matter more than web checkout.

The choice matters most if your business changes in year two. With Shopify, you cancel, export your data, and move on. With Clover, you give a month’s notice and pay the service fees left on the 18-month minimum period.

If you are sure your business will stay an in-person hospitality venue, Clover is the better tool. If you are not, start on Shopify, where changing your mind later costs you no exit fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Shopify POS available in the UK?

Yes. Shopify POS runs on Shopify Payments in the UK, with in-person rates from 1.7% + 0p on the Basic plan and 1.5% + 0p on the Advanced plan. Hardware ships to UK addresses; all card readers accept chip and PIN and contactless.

  • Does Clover work with UK banks?

Yes. Payouts go to the UK business bank account you nominate. Clover takes the card payments itself, through its parent company Fiserv, rather than through a separate bank acquirer. Its UK acquiring is provided by First Data Europe Limited, authorised by the FCA (register number 582703).

Your contract is with Clover, and card rates are quoted for your business rather than published.

  • Can Shopify POS replace a traditional card machine?

For a retail or service business, yes. The WisePad 3 reader handles the same card types as a standalone terminal: contactless, chip and PIN, and major card schemes.

The difference is that payments settle through Shopify Payments and appear in your Shopify admin rather than through a standalone merchant service account. If you already use Shopify for online sales, the POS app extends that same account to your physical counter.

  • Which is cheaper: Shopify POS or Clover?

For low-to-mid-volume retailers, Shopify POS at 1.7% + 0p (Basic) with no contract is the cost you can price in advance. At higher volumes, a negotiated Clover rate may save on transaction costs, once Clover’s device and service plan charges are added in.

The difficulty is comparison: Clover rates are quoted, not published, so you cannot model the full cost without a written quote. Get that quote, and price in the 18-month minimum period, before signing.
