A simple card reader that connects to your Android device can get your business up and running with the minimum hassle. For many small businesses, these card readers are the entry point into the payments market, facilitating credit card transactions at market stalls, trade shows and popups before they’re ready to sign up for a long-term contract with a major card machine provider.

In fact, many of these readers now have the complexity to take your business well beyond this point, given the power of the software that comes with them.

I’ve researched the best options on the market for their functionality, price point, transaction fees and customer service.

Best Credit Card Readers for Android

Best Credit Card Readers For Android: My Verdict

For most sellers, Square represents the best choice due to its low price point, superb software package, and no-contract solutions. Funds will be transferred to your bank account the next working day, and there’s a simple fixed transaction fee of 1.75%. It works with any UK-issued and most international tap, chip and PIN magnetic stripe cards with a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Maestro, Visa Electron or Vpay logo.

myPOS stands out as having some of the most comprehensive credit card readers for Android on the market. All options have a built-in 3G/4G DATA SIM for reliable payment processing even when your internet drops. They have a fixed transaction fee of 1.1% + 7p, and businesses with a high transaction volume cannot negotiate more favourable rates. That said, their software package lacks the complexity and user experience of Square.

Tide’s Card Reader is another excellent all-rounder, offering 4G connectivity and built-in printing capabilities in some of their devices. However, support is limited to in-app live chat, and you won’t be able to accept American Express or Samsung Pay, which could be inconvenient for customers. You’ll also need to have been a Tide customer for at least three months.

For businesses with a high transaction volume, the Revolut Reader is a great option. It’s more cost-effective than other card readers, offering the best in-person transaction rate of 0.8% + 2p for UK consumer cards. However, this rate increases to 2.6% + 2p for commercial and international card transactions, so it isn’t suitable for B2B businesses at trade shows.

There are no monthly fees, and the transaction rate is 1.10% + 7p.

It has the lowest in-person transaction rate of any credit card reader, charging 0.8% + 2p for UK consumer cards. However, this increases to 2.6% + 2p for international and commercial cards, making Revolut more suitable for businesses that sell directly to consumers than B2B.

One of the standout features of the Revolut Reader is its next-day settlement, ensuring that funds are accessible promptly, even on holidays and weekends. This quick access to funds empowers businesses to manage cash flow efficiently and keep operations running smoothly.

Revolut claims the reader allows you to process sales in under 3 seconds, streamlining the sales process.

Your funds will be transferred to your bank account the next working day, or you can pay 1% for instant access, helping you to manage your cash flow.

Setting up the Square Reader is quick and easy, and the powerful battery lasts all day.

It’s compatible with Android devices running 7.0 or later and Apple devices running iOS 14.0 or later, apart from iPad 2 and 3.

Zettle by PayPal Credit Card Reader

Zettle by PayPal offers two options suitable for e-commerce businesses that only need to accept in-person payments occasionally.

The Zettle Card Reader 2 is a reliable choice for businesses looking to accept card and contactless payments.

The Card Reader is priced from £29 and accepts chip & PIN cards and contactless payments, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

Although the battery life lasts approximately 8 hours or 100 transactions, this is significantly shorter than other card readers, which could be an issue for businesses with high transaction volumes.

However, you can overcome this by purchasing a charging dock for £39 + VAT to charge your card reader between uses.

The Zettle Card Reader is compatible with most Android devices with Bluetooth running five or higher and offers various setup options to suit different business needs, from fixed counters to portable setups.

There’s no built-in connectivity, so you will need an internet, 3G, or 4G connection to use the device.

Alternatively, the Zettle Terminal offers a more comprehensive solution.

Priced from £149, it can connect to WiFi or operate independently, that’s to a preloaded 3G/4G SIM card, making it suitable for market stall traders, pop-up shops or businesses with weak internet connections.

The built-in POS app enables inventory management, detailed reporting, and receipt printing from one device.

You can also opt for the Terminal with a built-in barcode scanner to accelerate sales, simplify inventory management, and facilitate gift card transactions.

In contrast to the Zettle Card Reader, the battery lasts for around 12 hours with average use. However, this is reduced to 4 to 6 hours with intensive usage, which could still be inconvenient if you use it on the go.

Both Zettle solutions have no monthly fees or long-term contracts. Simply buy the hardware and pay a 1.75% transaction fee per payment processed.

Zettle’s integration with PayPal Business accounts means funds can be transferred to your account in just minutes, helping you improve your cash flow.

All devices are PCI-certified, ensuring compliance with strict industry standards for handling card data.

With tamper-proof design, encryption of payment data, and transaction protection covering up to £250 in eligible chargebacks per month, businesses can trust in the safety of their transactions.

However, businesses with higher chargeback volumes may find alternatives such as myPOS and Tide more suitable.

Shopify Credit Card Reader

Shopify has a range of two card readers to choose from, best suited to eCommerce businesses that already use Shopify’s services.

The most affordable option is the WisePad 3 card reader, priced at £49.00

It seamlessly integrates with Shopify POS, ensuring smooth transactions via tap or chip and PIN, including Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Compact and lightweight, the WisePad 3 connects wirelessly to your Android device via Bluetooth, offering a user-friendly interface with a customer-facing display.

There’s no built-in connectivity, which could prevent you from processing payments if your signal drops.

Your Android device must be running an operating system of at least 7.0, and its battery life lasts around 500-600 transactions after a 3- 4-hour charge.

Shopify POS Go combines a compact design with advanced POS features for a more comprehensive solution.

The device costs £169.00 and combines a POS terminal, barcode scanner, and card reader. With no need for extra hardware, it streamlines payment processing, making transactions efficient and hassle-free.

Its user-friendly interface and integrated barcode scanner enhance operational efficiency, while its long battery life ensures uninterrupted service throughout the day.

With Wi-Fi connectivity, it has a high-performance processor, a 5.5″ HD display and a long-life battery for a reliable and seamless user experience.

However, there are no built-in printing capabilities, and you cannot connect a receipt printer via Bluetooth, which could be inconvenient if you already have existing hardware.

For countertop payments, you can purchase the Shopify POS Terminal for £199.00, including a Shopify POS Go device and a charging dock to keep your system secure.

Both devices are EMV certified, meeting PCI DSS requirements for data protection.

They also require Shopify Payments to be enabled and your Android device running the Shopify POS app version 9.0.0 or later.

You get 24/7 support, free shipping, a 30-day return policy, and a standard 1-year, which can be extended to 2 years with a POS Pro membership.

Unlike most card readers, you will have to pay a monthly Shopify fee, ranging from £5 per month for the Starter plan to £344 per month for the Advanced plan.

As you’d expect, the more you pay for your plan, the lower your fixed transaction rates will be.

While the £5 per month Stater plan looks appealing for new businesses, the 5% in-person transaction rate makes it one of the least affordable options.

Although you can reduce your in-person transaction rate to 1.5% by signing up for the Advanced Plan, an alternative provider such as myPOS and Tide would be more cost-effective.

There are a handful of credit card readers to choose from, each with advantages and best suited to different types of business.

The main types of credit card readers for Android you will see are

  1. Mobile Card Readers: These are small devices that you attach to your Android phone or tablet and let you swipe or insert credit cards to process payments. They’re portable and great for businesses on the go, like food trucks or market stalls.
  2. Bluetooth Card Readers: These card readers connect to your Android device using Bluetooth. They’re often used in retail stores and cafes as you don’t need to be physically attached to your phone or tablet, giving you more flexibility.
  3. NFC (Near Field Communication) Readers: These card readers use wireless technology to accept contactless payments. They’re fast and convenient, especially for businesses with high volumes of transactions.
  4. POS Systems with In-Built Card Readers: These systems process payments and handle other business functions like inventory management, reporting, and customer relationship management (CRM). They’re popular in restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses that need comprehensive management tools.

How to Choose the Best Credit Card Reader for Android Devices

To choose the best credit card reader for your business, you’ll need to consider several factors, including:

  1. Identify Business Requirements: Determine what type of transactions you’ll be processing (e.g., in-person, online), your average transaction volume, and the kinds of payment methods your customers prefer (e.g., chip cards, contactless payments).
  2. Consider Compatibility: Ensure your card reader is compatible with your existing hardware and software systems.
  3. Evaluate Features: Look for card readers with essential features such as encryption for secure transactions, EMV chip card acceptance, NFC capabilities for contactless payments, and compatibility with popular payment processing services. Consider additional features like inventory management, reporting tools, and integration with POS systems if they align with your business needs.
  4. Assess Security Measures: Choose a card reader that offers end-to-end encryption, tokenisation, and compliance with PCI DSS requirements to safeguard sensitive data and mitigate the risk of fraud.
  5. Compare Pricing Structures: Evaluate upfront costs, transaction fees, monthly subscription fees, and additional charges for hardware accessories or software upgrades. Consider the overall cost-effectiveness of each option based on your business’s transaction volume and budgetary constraints.
  6. Review Feedback and Ratings: Research user reviews, testimonials, and ratings of various card reader models to gauge user satisfaction, reliability, and performance in real-world scenarios.
  7. Assess Customer Service: Choose a provider that offers responsive customer support services, including technical assistance, troubleshooting guidance, and software updates. Evaluate the provider’s support channels (e.g., phone, email, live chat) and availability to promptly address any issues or inquiries.
  8. Trial Period or Demo: Testing the device firsthand allows you to assess its functionality, user-friendliness, and compatibility with your business operations before making a final commitment.
